Ingredients

  • 2 pounds starchy potatoes (Russets or Yukon Golds), thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for greasing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and grease a baking dish with butter.
  2. Thinly slice the potatoes to about an eighth of an inch thick.
  3. In a bowl, mix heavy cream with minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Optionally add nutmeg for extra flavor.
  4. Layer half of the potato slices in the baking dish. Pour half of the cream mixture over them and sprinkle with half of the cheese. Repeat layers.
  5. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes until potatoes are tender.
  6. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown on top.
