Ingredients

For the Bread
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1.5 cups buttermilk
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter can substitute with olive oil
Optional Add-ins
  • 1 cup raisins or currants
  • 1 tablespoon caraway seeds

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425?F (220?C).
  2. Combine the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl: all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Whisk them together until they are well blended and free of lumps.
  3. Add buttermilk gradually into the dry ingredients. Stir gently with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms, being careful not to overmix.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface. Knead it gently for about 30 seconds just until it comes together.
  5. Shape the dough into a round loaf about 1.5 inches thick.
  6. Score the top with a deep cross using a sharp knife.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  8. Cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing.
